Mergui Archipelago Cruises
For ever fifty years, the beautiful archipelago, comprising over 800 islands, has been virtually inaccessible for foreign visitors. Diving in the waters of the Mergui Archipelago is action-packed with large pelagic and with an amazing diversity of wildlife, flora and fauna. The only human inhabitants in the area are the Moken, a nomadic seafaring race whose lifestyle has changed very little over the years, still practicing the same fishing and boat building techniques used for generations.
Entry and exit immigration point from Thailand is Kawthaung, in the southern most tip of Myanmar. Nearest airports are Phuket and Ranong.
9 Day Diving Cruise with Sailing yacht
Diving in Myanmar is action –packed with large pelagic and schooling fish. Big sharks abound; silvertip, black tip, gray reef shark, whale sharks and the occasional bull shark. There were over 100 manta rays once seen on one dive alone! Great macro life can be found. Sea horses , ornate ghost-pipe and stonefish are amongst the archipelago’s rare inhabitants and huge barrel sponges , soft and hard corals abound.
Day 01 Check-in to Dive Center in Phuket by 8:15 AM for departure by 9:00 AM by air- conditioned minibus. Arrive in Ranong at the Thai/Myanmar border by 3:00 PM, shopping en route for lunch. Check out at immigration in Ranong .then cross the Pakchan River (the border) by long-tail boat to Kawthaung. Board the yacht. Sightseeing and shopping in this interesting border town. Depart from Kawthaung by 6:00 PM for the Mergui Archipelago.
Day 02 Western Rocky islet (three great dives). Highlight of the dive site being a big cave filled with fifty or more lobsters and thousands of glassfish. Good chance to see mantas, whale sharks as well as the resident gray reef, black tip and white sharks.
Day 03 North and South Twin islands (three dives). Opportunities to see big pelagies, manta rays, as well as leopard and nurse sharks.
Day 04 Steward Island, Cavern Island and High Rock (three dives) plus optional night dive. Great macro life makes these sites a “ must see” on any diver’s checklist. Commonly seen are sea horses, ornate ghost-pipe fish, frogfish, stonefish, turtles, rays, sea snakes, cuttle fish and much more.
Day 05 Black Rock (three dives). This dive site consistently offers some of the best diving to be found anywhere in the Andaman Sea. A true oceanic dive site, with no other land in sight. Big pelagics are virtually guaranteed. Manta rays, whale sharks plus lots of other different types of sharks and rays can all be seen here.
Day 06 Torres Islands & Devil Rock, expect to see large school of mobula rays (small manta rays), virtually guaranteed here and quite often in schools of one hundred and more. Bull sharks are a common sighting at Torres Islands.
Day 07 Early morning travel south back to Black Rock (three dives). a night dive is available as additional dive.
Day 08 “ In through the outdoor”, considered by virtually all guests to be the best dive of the trip. Highlights of this dive site are the big swim through, which is home to more than ten resident gray reef sharks and a very healthy coral reef, inhabited by a profusion of fish life. At the end of the afternoon, sail back to Kawthaung.
Day 09 Early morning depart Kawthaung and travel back to Phuket. Arrive in Phuket at 3:00 P.M.
